The cerebral hemispheres are one of the two regions of the central nervous system, separated by the median plane. The median plane is the line that separates the body in two. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. People who are left handed use the right side of the brain, and people who are right handed use the left side of the brain.
The right hemisphere controls images and visual ability. The left hemisphere controls speech and language, and analyzes them. The left hemisphere controls most mathematics, but it depends what type of mathematics you are talking about. In other words, the left hemisphere does low level mathematics, and the right hemisphere controls high level mathematics. Low level meaning kindergarten things like 2 + 2. High level meaning eighth grade things like nine-hundred sixty three times nine million seven hundred five thousand four hundred ninety seven.
Damage to the cerebral hemispheres can cause speech and language disorders. So if the left hemisphere is damaged someone may stutter after damage to this hemisphere. Damage to the right hemisphere can cause problems with verbal and social communications. For example, a person may say inappropriate things or blurt out random phrases.
